Movie posters have been around for a long time and they have changed over the years. They have gone from more illustrative to photography based to a realistic painting style. Even today they are still evolving as the technology for creating a poster evolves.
A relatively more recent trend is the teaser or advanced movie poster. It is meant to create a little bit of a tease for an movie that is coming out. Is is usually produced farther in advance of the regular movie poster. The teaser posters tend to have less information. Sometimes they are more cryptic and you have to be in the know to understand it.
Then there are alternative movie posters. These can be made by the studio or can be fan produced.
